First, I guess? :)
ReplyDeleteWell, as a pretty casual reader, I enjoy the blog. Keep up the good work.
One thing I'd like more of is *stories*, personal experiences of folks being used photo dealers. You must see a lot of interesting things and people in this position. Tell us about them! For example, the gold Leica R3 post of a few days ago: moderately interesting to learn about this model. But *more* interesting: How did you acquire this particular unit? From whom? What's the history of this particular unit? Did you have to do any repairs to make it sale-ready? If it's going to go lightning fast, didn't you price it too low?
I guess the summary is: I can read about camera "stuff" anywhere. I can only read about the life of a major used camera dealer here.
Oh, interesting thought Reid! Thanks for sharing. There are of course a few obstacles to the "story" angle... one being that we are in a business where we wouldn't want to tell a story about a customer that may be funny to you or me, but may offend them if they were to read it. It's also a process, and the equipment we get in goes through multiple channels where information such as where we got something from and a real (interesting) story may be lost. For example, the gold Leica was purchased by one of our traveling buyers, then came into our receiving department, then went to a technician to test and write up, who then came to me with the interesting piece, who then did some research and took some photos of it, whew.
ReplyDeleteBUT, there's certainly some other "story" angles we could cover and I will certainly work on that. You're right that it would be a great idea. So... my summary to you is, I'll add: write about life at KEH to my list!
-Jenn
The blog is a great idea, and as a happy KEH customer, I enjoy reading it.
ReplyDeleteProfiles on older cameras as well as some of the more popular film cameras can be valuable to newer photographers as well as more experienced photographers trying to decide on their next KEH purchase.
That story you just listed would be very interesting for any item. Can you photo-document and write it up for something?
ReplyDeleteI'm sure many buyers and sellers would be more than happy to be quoted and/or photographed for something like this; you'd just have to ask first. Obviously you can't do that for all items, but if you picked one or a few to write up, I'd find that fascinating.
Oh, and here's another idea: photographs and detailed descriptions of example items in each of your condition grades, and perhaps also photos made with each example. You could have a lot of fun in the Ugly and As-Is grades.
I am now working on a new "behind the scenes" section of the blog. I'm expecting the first post to go up in the next few weeks, so stay tuned. Thank you for all of your suggestions!
